Ontario, California – Saturday night 12 round contest in a lightweight division against Giovani Cabrera was supposed to be the toughest test of William Zepeda’s professional career. It wasn’t. Instead, enthusiastic fans at the Toyota Arena witnessed another violent destruction engineered by rising star,
William Zepeda.(31-0 27KO’S).
The only round that was competitive was the first one. Coached by famous Freddie Roach, Cabrera (22-2,7KO’S)came out, firing from all angles and moving quite fluidly. It seemed to have confused Zepeda temporarily. In between rounds one and two Zepeda’s coach insisted that his charge does not take a backwards step. that’s when it all went wrong for the Chicago based Cabrera .William Zepeda closed the distance and started to unleash furious combinations to the head and to the body. Zepeda’s freight train continued to roll downhill in the third stanza as he put his opponent under serious pressure with violent combinations. A liver shot dropped Cabrera on his knees. Referee Taylor counted till 10 before Cabrera decided to get up. the fight was stopped at 1:51 of the third round.
“He got me right in the liver,” said Cabrera after the fight:” Then after a few seconds, I thought I was going to get up for sure then it was 10 and I was like oh man, I lost track of the count.” From where I was sitting, It looked like Cabrera didn’t want anymore of this smoke and decided to let referee count him out.
” I knew my preparation was going to push me forward,” said Zepeda in a post fight interview:” I know I have been working. My discipline will always overcome anything. People say that I just throw punches and that’s all but once they get in the ring with me, it’s a different story. We are going to look for the opportunity to become a world champion.”
As it almost becoming a norm, Boxing fans at the Toyota Arena were treated to a controversy in a co- main event of 10 round flight weight contest between Ricardo Sandoval (25-2,18KO’S) and Angel Acosta(24-5,22KO’S). It was a hard fought back-and-forth battle throughout. Sandoval landed a sharp uppercut in the middle of the 10th round and continued to apply pressure and then seemingly out of nowhere referee, Raul Caiz Jr waved off the contest. The crowd booed with vigor dishartened by the injustice.
“ I felt good in the fight,” said Acosta:” it was a very close fight. Sandoval is fast and strong, but in reality the fight shouldn’t have ended.”
